Zion Fall Color Tour
About the time it’s all over everywhere else, the fall display in Zion is just hitting its stride. Reds, yellows and everything in between surrounded by red canyon walls and exquisite bounce light make this a Technicolor, almost Disneychrome dream. This trip is timed to optimize the odds of finding that great color that Zion offers. While the cottonwoods often peak in mid November, the maples, box elders and oaks should be at their best during our visit.
Springdale, Utah will be our base of operations. Ample lodging and dining options, and very close proximity to the Park make this a logistical dream. The shorter daylight hours in late autumn mean we get adequate rest, and time to enjoy Springdale’s “après photo” ambience.
Expect to be working from or close to your vehicle much of the time. It is not yet clear when the canyon drive will open to private vehicles, however using the bus system is not a fatal problem, and there are multiple other locations as well. Short walks of a few hundred yards will be common, and short hikes of 2-3 miles round trip can offer exceptional opportunities. As the launch date draws closer and the group starts to develop, we will discuss personal and group objectives. If the group is unanimous in its goals and physical abilities, almost anything is possible. There may be options for pre-trip warm ups, and post-trip extensions on a one-on-one or small group basis.
You will need to provide a vehicle, and be able to transport a non-photographing companion if you are bringing one. Once in Springdale, car-pooling will be an option. 4WD is not necessary for this trip. I will help coordinate lodging – there are several reasonably priced and comfortable motels to choose from. Camping is available close by in the Park, and RV facilities are close by as well.
